Living Just Got Easier

Finding Your Local Farmers’ Market: An Outing with Safety for Seniors in Mind

My Mom grew up on a farm. So, we always had a garden at home when I was young. I loved watching a local farmer come by with his tractor to “till” the soil and help us get ready for the new growing season. My siblings and I helped our Mom plant, weed, and pick vegetables, which at the time seemed like a huge chore.

However, as an adult, I love working in my annual garden! It is enjoyable to share fresh produce with friends and co-workers that came directly from my garden. I have also carried on our family tradition of canning and freezing produce as time has permitted.

It is wonderful to have local, in-season fruits and vegetables. In this time of COVID-19, buying from vendors at our Saturday farmers’ market seems a great way to obtain food directly from a trusted source. These summer markets are held outdoors, making it easier to maintain physical distancing while shopping.

In fact, I usually call ahead to pre-order from vendors to increase ease of shopping, as well as reduce contact as recommended at this time. The market where I shop has implemented operational policies to help keep everyone safe and healthy with our current COVID-19 environment in mind, including offering curbside pick-up for pre-orders.

I have felt safe and comfortable over the past months at our local farmers’ market with these policies in place. Most patrons wear masks, as recommend by the CDC, and maintain awareness of physical distancing protocols.

As the weather has been nice these past weekends, shopping at the farmers’ market first thing Saturday morning has been a highlight of my week! Consider starting your weekend by stopping by your local outdoor farmers’ market. Then, create a fresh, delicious meal Saturday night. Market vendors typically offer vegetables, fruits, baked goods, canned goods, and other artisan products. Find delicious local produce, support your area farmers, and enjoy the outdoor venue while keeping COVID precautions in mind!

For information on locations and times for your local farmers’ market, search online for "outdoor farmers’ markets near me" or search on Facebook for "outdoor farmers’ market in (list your town)" to find their Facebook page!
