As our community begins to practice social-distancing to protect those most vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, there are many resources available to older adults which can help isolate them from potential exposure. While staying home is an important measure to avoid contracting the virus, this creates a need for services ranging from essential needs like food to basic human interaction. While food delivery is important to avoid restaurants, an online support group could be just as important for maintaining mental health during the crisis. Below are some recommendations for those most at-risk in our community. This is an evolving list, so check back often for updates. If you have any suggestions, let us know!
East TN Caregiver Support
This is a safe place for family caregivers to share ideas, ask for advice, and offer support. Follow the link here to visit the Facebook page.
Online Family Dementia Support Meeting: A Self-Care & Respite Hour
Care Around the Block: CAB Club Community presents a monthly online support meeting for family dementia caregivers. This meeting occurs the 3rd Monday of each month from 1-2 PM. Please contact us at 865-444-6787 to register and receive a link with instructions to the online meeting room.
Two large supermarkets in the East TN now offer grocery delivery. To shop, visit them online and choose “delivery” as your method of shopping. Before adding to your cart, you will be asked for your address and preferred delivery time. The delivery fee is $8-10 for Walmart and $10-12 for Kroger, in addition to your groceries. Not comfortable shopping on a computer? Your family members can order for you from anywhere. If you need further assistance, we also offer phone assistance with online ordering through our Care Partners Concierge rates, or we can shop in-person for you at our hourly rates.
CVS and MAC's Pharmacy deliver prescription medications throughout the Knoxville area. If you use another pharmacy and don’t want to switch, our Care Managers can help manage medications, pick up from your pharmacy, and deliver and fill pill boxes at your home.
Limiting exposure to those outside your home is important. If you need assistance with meals, consider a meal prep day once or twice weekly. At CAB, our Care Partners can arrive with groceries (or facilitate delivery through the store), cook for the week, clean up, then leave your fridge stocked with ready-to-go meals of your choice.
Meal Delivery Services
When visiting restaurants isn’t an option, many restaurants partner with various meal delivery services so your food is delivered to your door. Two popular options are listed below.
Uber Eats usually charges a $4.99 delivery fee which doesn’t include tax or tip, but Uber has waived the delivery fee for a limited time. Visit www.Ubereats.com for a list of available restaurants at your address.
Grub Hub typically offers a wider selection, but delivery fees are slightly higher as well. No fee cancellation is reported at this time. Visit www.grubhub.com for a list of available restaurants and delivery fees at your address.
Mobile Pet Care
Does Fido need a bath? Consider reaching out to a mobile grooming service. These services will come to you and groom your pet in their grooming vehicle. Two services in Knoxville include Asgard Mobile Grooming which can be reached at (865) 604-3291 and A Woolf Mobile Pet Grooming which can be reached at (865) 755-7387.
If your pet needs vet services, there is a vet in Knoxville who will make house calls. The Visiting Vet can be reached at (865) 661-1570. Don’t want to change your vet or groomer? Our Care Partners can be hired by the hour for errands, including taking your pet to get groomed or to the vet of your choice.
Need to leave the house for some shopping? Try choosing a store that is offering a dedicated block of time for those at high risk for COVID-19. Click here for a list of stores in Knoxville that have dedicated the first hour of operations for these at-risk individuals.
Online Games with Chat Features
Even though visiting your favorite community center or bridge club might be off the table now, there are still ways to play your favorite games and be social. The app, Plato, offers private group chats and over 30+ games. If you are comfortable using your computer or a smartphone, Plato is a great way to stay connected and have fun. You can download the app here.
Museums Offering Free Virtual Tours
Just because you're home doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate art and culture from around the world. Museums such as the British Museum in London, the Guggenheim in New York, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam are offering free tours from the comfort of your couch. Visit Travel and Leisure for a full list here.
